Toronto's Growing Spatial Divide: An Update on the "Three Cities in Toronto" Trend, 1970-2012

Talk description 
Income and wealth inequality are changing our cities in terms of who lives where by socio-economic and ethno-cultural status. This is creating new socio-spatial patterns of segregation.

This talk will outline: 

  • How Canada compares with other similar nations in terms of income inequality;
  • What the updated neighbourhood change trends are in Toronto; and
  •  How trends in Toronto compare with those in Montreal, Calgary, Vancouver and Chicago.

Presenter Bios 

David Hulchanski is a professor of housing and community development at the University of Toronto. He is the principal investigator of the Neighbourhood Change Research Partnership, studying socio-spatial polarization trends in major metropolitan areas (a 7-year research initiative funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada).
